Ko Young-woo runs again dreaming of becoming the Kiwoom Heroes' main third baseman.
Ko has been participating in the rookie camp, a club that has been in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, since the 6th. With the focus on improving the skills of young players under the third year of joining the team, Ko is preparing for a powerful leap forward toward his second professional season.
Ko ended his dream-like first season as a pro baseball player, posting a batting average of 0.256 (65 hits in 254) and 35 RBIs in 94 games with an OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) of 0.648. He mostly played as a third baseman (65 games, 442 ⅔ innings), while also playing various positions including shortstop (14 games, 67 innings) and second baseman (10 games, 45 innings), energizing the infielders.
Ko Young-woo felt a lot in many ways because it was the finishing camp he played in his first season.
"It is different from last year when I joined the wrap-up camp. Back then, I just wanted to do well and show something. I am using it as a time to find things that I need to supplement or improve," he said. "I am trying to improve my physical strength by weight training and running a lot. As a professional player plays games every day, I found it very physically challenging. I felt that a definite routine is also important."
Ko Young-woo, a former member of the baseball entertainment program "The Greatest Baseball" and highly anticipated since his first year as a player. He became the professional player he aimed for while wearing Kiwoom's uniform, but he cannot be satisfied here.
Looking back on the unforgettable 2024 season, he said, "My goal for the first year was about 70 percent. My goal was to play for the first team for a long time without getting hurt, but I ended up moving to the Futures League due to poor results. I regret that and that's 70 percent."
"In defense, I clearly identified my weaknesses. Third baseman has difficulty hitting a bound. I have to follow the bounce with my legs, but I tried to handle it only with my hands. Amateurs were okay because their batting speed was not fast, but professional players felt it was difficult. I practice a lot with my defense coach, and I think I need to supplement it hard."
Kiwoom is likely to have fluctuations in its offseason infield. This is because Kim Hye-sung plans to launch a posting system (closed competitive bidding) to advance to the Major League. If the main second baseman Kim Hye-sung leaves, there is a high possibility of a series of transfers to fill the position. If Song Sung-moon, who is guarding the hot corner, goes to second base, there is a possibility that Ko Young-woo will take over the empty third base. 안전놀이터
He spent his first professional season receiving a lot of love from many fans. He hoped to take advantage of this rookie camp to grow further. "The main position is at third base, and there are many players here who stand out by hitting rather than defending. I am paying a lot of attention to it because I think I need to make more progress in hitting to be more competitive," he said. "Fans have shown a lot of support and love this year. Thank you. I will do my best to show you a lot of good performances next year. Please give me a lot of support."
